As Alcohol Awareness Month 2022 comes to an end, we thought we’d chat about some quick facts about the Unites States (of booze). Speaking of booze – it’s no secret that drinking went up during the pandemic, but did you know? … One billion (with a B) drinks per month is roughly how much Americans increased their alcohol intake during the first nine months of the pandemic! Somewhat shocking if you ask us and also a peak into how we as Americans handle stressful situations.
- Research shows U.S. adults have increased their drinking, binge drinking, and extreme binge drinking significantly according to the National Institutes of Health!
- One in every 12 adults suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence – that is around 17.6 million people! To add, several million more participate in patterns of drinking that can potentially lead to alcohol dependence.
- As a progressive disease, alcoholism can advance quickly from heavy drinking to a disorder over time. It is a slippery slope!
- The national alcohol related hospitalizations increased from 30% to 50% in 2020. Many of these hospitalizations were due to alcohol-associated cirrhosis, a liver disease indicating end-stage liver scarring.
- Annually an estimated 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes! Alcohol is the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States.
