Super Bowl Sunday is going to kick up some fun and for some, fumbles around their sobriety! You do not have to drink just because it is the Super Bowl but that is easier said then done for some! For those of you who know that but have found yourself breaking your sobriety streak before on Super Bowl … we some sober Sunday tips for you!

How do you stay sober on Super Bowl Sunday? Game on! Tip number one is for the part goer! If you are heading out to a Super Bowl Party where it’s likely there will be the most pressure to drink, you have to mentally prepare. You know there will be alcohol there and maybe even a pushy host. Just like in the game, practice makes perfect here! Practice what you will say to decline that beer, practice what you will do if someone won’t lay off, and practice what you need to do to fight off the temptation to drink should it arise. Plan to indulge in something else – like seriously bring your own goodies that you love and go to town on your nachos and non-alcoholic drinks! This practicing and planning can save you from a whole lot of hangover nonsense and keep you on your path of recovery. Make sure to check in with yourself if you stumbled on previous Super Bowls and check for your own blind spots on what happened and why you ultimately drank. If you struggle in crowds with peer pressure you might just want to go for our next tip!

Celebrate the Super Bowl with a tight crew that doesn’t drink or totally respects your sobriety. It’s true when you become sober your circle changes. Why not celebrate the kickoffs and winning touchdowns with your winning group of loved ones. It’s not where you are, it’s who you are with. Being in a supportive circle can help you remember why you chose sobriety in the first place.

Plan your own Super Bowl Party! Hey if you are hosting then you get to pick who’s on the invite list, what’s being served up, and much more! Simply put, hosting your own party gives you some control over the day. It also keeps you very busy! When you are catering to others you are less likely to slip up and get tackled with temptation … you will have too much to do!

Always always have an escape route! No matter what you are celebrating, if you find yourself in a not so sober friendly situation and want to get out – you will need an escape route. This can simply mean you drive your own car and even have tentative plans (even if they are just to go home) to keep yourself safe. You don’t want to find yourself entertaining drugs and alcohol that will affect all the hard work you’ve put in to get sober! Addiction is a slippery slope and if you’ve been there you know that!
