Cara Delevingne is a famous British actress and model that has recently made headlines for speaking out about some very concerning footage of her that was caught on tape in 2022. The footage caught at an airport is a long runway away from Delevingne’s stunning Dior campaigns and depicts her acting erratically and looking very unwell. Delevingne’s family, friends, and fans all were concerned for Delevingne’s health and mental state when the photos and video of her surfaced. Now Delevingne is speaking out about the low point and how it helped her get the help she so desperately needed.

Delevingne was born in London, England and started her modeling career at only 17 years old. She gained success quickly and walked in top designer shows including Chanel and Burberry. Although her dreams had come true, Delevingne struggled with depression and thoughts of suicide and told Vogue back in 2015 that she eventually started using drugs to help her cope with her mental health. She was looking for a way out and a way to numb the pain as many people do that face mental health challenges. Unfortunately Delevingne’s attempts to numb only left her spiraling downhill until she finally realized she needed help. She opened up in 2015 about seeking support and getting to a better space mentally to which she credited healthy habits, therapy, and medication.

Delevingne became a mental health advocate and used her story and her platform to help spread mental health awareness … So when photos of her depicting a very different reality in 2022 surfaced, it was shocking to see the star so unwell. Delevingne is now saying the paparazzi photos made her realize how unwell she was and served as a reality check to get support again. She entered into rehab with a 12-step program in wake of the photos surfacing for alcohol use and other personal issues that had once again led her down a dark path. The photos showed Delevingne disheveled after returning from the Burning Man festival, smoking, barefoot, and acting odd. Delevingne is now describing the photos in a 2023 interview with Vogue as embarrassing and shaming saying, “It’s heartbreaking because I thought I was having fun, but at some point it was like, Okay, I don’t look well.” “You know, sometimes you need a reality check, so in a way those pictures were something to be grateful for.”

Delevingne goes on to describe her childhood and being exposed to addiction due to her Mother’s struggles with alcohol. She struggled as she grew into adulthood figuring out who she was and started entering the party scene as a teenager. When Covid hit, so did another wave of mental health challenges and loneliness that sent Delevingne tumbling back into the party scene and trying to escape her struggles. Now as she speaks out again about her comeback, she is serving as an example of what many people experience when struggling with mental health and addiction, that recovery is an ongoing process. Sobriety takes constant work and addiction sits on a slippery slope especially for those that struggle with mood disorders like depression and anxiety.
