What is ‘Gas Station Heroin”? An over-the-counter drug, sold at gas stations across the country called Tianeptine, which has been dubbed “gas station heroin.” Those who are aware of how dangerous the drug is are asking for its universal ban by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Tianeptine (aka Gas Station Heroin) is marketed to the public as a dietary supplement. Overseas, it’s been used for treating depression. Many can find it at their local gas station or even grocery store commonly sold as Tianna Red or ZaZa Red. Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News medical contributor stated, “”People are overdosing,”. “There’s plenty of calls to poison centers. Doctors can do nothing about it.” He also noted that the drug “works like an opioid.” Dr. Siegel warns of the dangers associated with the drug and is asking the FDA step up to ensure our country is safe. So far the drug is only banned in 6 states.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) took a report on Tianeptine in 2018 noting poison control centers saw an increase in calls related to the drug between 2000 – 2017. The CDC noted that the data could suggest a “possible emerging public health risk.” The report also stated, “the associated health effects included neurologic, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal signs and symptoms, with some effects mimicking opioid toxicity and withdrawal.”

The FDA made their own statements around Tianeptine saying they have issued warning letters for those companies that are illegally marketing the drug as a dietary supplement or other forms of unapproved drugs. Dr. Siegel argues the FDA has not done enough and needs to take further action. It is alarming that a drug like this is being sold over-the-counter, easily accessible to the public.
