What is National Recovery Month?
Besides cooler temperatures for us living in Arizona, September also brings with it the month long observance of National Recovery Month. Celebrating it’s 27th year in 2017, National Recovery Month seeks to bring positive attention to the patients who have successfully reclaimed their lives from addiction or mental illness, and the facilities and staff that make recovery possible. Originally created in 1989 to honor the work of substance use treatment professionals, the month has evolved over the years to encompass all aspects of behavioral health.
How You Can help
This event is all about education and awareness. The mission listed on RecoveryMonth.gov states the purpose behind National Recovery Month is “…to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life.”.
In the spirit of that, RecoveryMonth.gov has provided the following tools to help spread the positive message and awareness behind the event:
- Recovery Month Toolkit – tips and resources for planning Recovery Month events and distributing information in communities across the nation.
- Logos, banners, flyers, and customizable posters – promote Recovery Month on social media, your website, and in your community.
- Public Service Announcements – tools for promoting the message that prevention works, treatment is effective, and recovery is possible.
You can also share your recovery story with the Scottsdale Recovery community on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Simply by sharing your experience with others you can provide the motivation needed for someone else to start on their own road to recovery.
Scottsdale Recovery Center is hosting a health fair for the community on September 22nd, 2017 starting at 10am. The Mayor of Scottsdale, Jim Lane, will be joining and speaking with us. Scottsdale Recovery Center will also be giving away one gift certificate for a 30 day stay at our facility. A family member or a friend can give someone they know struggling with addiction the gift of the highest level of care and treatment in the valley.
There will be local vendors with healthy food/drink options, an education table with resources from Scottsdale Recovery Center and Not My Kid, and many other features to bring this community together to help raise awareness. You can view the event on Facebook here.
