People that abuse alcohol becomes addicted to it and may need help to become sober and remain alcohol-free. This may require inpatient rehab. If the addiction is not real severe, there is a chance that outpatient rehab may work without the need for inpatient care. Either way, some form of rehab is needed. Here you will learn how to cope with the pressures of not having the constant, close support and still be able to stay sober.
Once there has been enough progress made you are then ready for outpatient therapy. At this point, you will be living at home but the attending group and individual sessions. The number of these sessions in a week depends on your overall progress. Being at home is great but also creates a new set of issues that need to be addressed. One of these is re-establishing relationships with family. Many facilities offer family therapy to help with this. Communication and trust have been torn down by the alcohol abuse, and sometimes families need help getting these back. This step could last a few months or years. There are some that require counseling for the rest of their life.
